General Background
Dr. Marlin Schaich received a Ph.D. and an M.A. in English from the University of Kansas in 2002 and 1992, respectively. He also holds a B.A. in English (1989) and a B.B.A. in Business Administration (1986) from Wichita State University. Dr. Schaich has broad experience in teaching. Beginning with eight years of designing and teaching courses in composition and literature at the University of Kansas, his teaching career includes courses and course integrations on critical reflection, critical thinking, developmental writing, humanities, journaling, research writing, speech communication, and technical and professional writing.
Dr. Schaich's memberships in the WAC Clearinghouse, the Conference on Basic Writing, and the National Council of Teachers of English keep him abreast of research findings in the field of English. As Director of the Writing Across the Curriculum (WAC) program at Nebraska Methodist College, Dr. Schaich consults with faculty members and offers faculty workshops to develop their skills in effective pedagogy, writing to learn, and writing in the professions. Recent workshops for students include "Synthesizing Source Material," "Research Writing Workshop: The Outline and the Abstract," and "Academic Writing: Applying the Writing Process to Discussion Boards, Paper, and More"; recent workshops for faculty include "Resources and Best Practices for Using Writing in Teaching," "Is Technology Our Enemy?" and "Responding to Requests for Letters of Reference." Dr. Schaich's research interests include classical oratory, discourse analysis, learning-centered pedagogy, reading-writing connections, and the rhetoric of 17th century British prose.
