I just wanted to let you all know that I thought the discussion exchange in Week 4 was fabulous.  There was a real conversation going in that discussion, and your interactions with each other showed strong knowledge of Justinian, Martin Luther, and the Columbian Exchange.  It also showed insightful analysis of what was happening in their time, as well as application of lessons from their time to our own lives.

Week 5 shows us the world on the cusp of a new era.  Look for these developments and how they have shaped the world into the one we experience today: 
Encounters between the West and Asia, and reactions by China, Korea, Japan, and Southeast Asia;
  • Changing relationships between citizens and the state
  • The impact of colonies on the parent state and the colonized peoples
  • Change in power structures due to revolutions (in American colonies and in France)
  • The effect of one dominant political figure in Europe: Napoleon
