Welcome to HUM 271!

In this course you will begin to understand and appreciate the major themes, sacred texts, rituals and symbols as well as the cultural expressions and historical developments of 6 of the worlds major religious traditions. Through assigned readings, discussion groups, online research, visits to local places of worship and video clips, you will begin to recognize the similarities and differences among these religious traditions.

This course is meant to deepen your understanding of these religions, rather than evaluate them according to your own particular religious belief or culture. As a health care professional, I believe this course will enhance your ability to accept and serve the patients you care for, and better understand your peers who may hold differing religious beliefs.

Course Objectives:
  • Students will demonstrate the ability to understand, analyze and synthesize religious traditions.
  • Students will experience and demonstrate an appreciation for diverse expressions of religion.
  • Students will reflect on their own beliefs and religious traditions, as they encounter others through this course.

Your Instructor, Dan Johnston, MDiv, Chaplain at Methodist Hospital and Adjunct Instructor in the Division of Arts and Sciences

Rev. Dan Johnston served as pastor of Mennonite congregations in Kansas, Iowa and Nebraska before joining the Methodist Health System. Dan lead the Health System’s Community Outreach to local faith communities, developing and supporting Health Ministry activities. After completing his Masters of Divinity degree, he joined the staff at Nebraska Methodist College to serve as Chaplain and part time instructor.

Following 10 years as the Campus Chaplain, Dan moved across Dodge Street and joined the Pastoral Care Staff as Chaplain at Methodist Hospital. Starting in September of 2016, he chose to become the full time chaplain at the Methodist Women's Hospital. These variety of experiences helped lay the foundation for his commitment to respect and learn from persons of diverse religious and spiritual backgrounds or who practice no religion at all.

Dan continues to stop by the college to help with the simulation lab and stays in touch with the college through the many alums who work throughout the Methodist Health System.
