Week 4 Objectives:
Through assigned reading's, videos, and discussion, the student will be able to:
  • Identify the major changes in Jewish religious practice throughout their recent history
  • Discover the role of the Land of Israel in Jewish life and faith
  • Find the connection between Judaism and Christianity
  • Clarify the role that Jesus of Nazareth played in the development of a new religion later called Christianity
  • Discover the divisions within early Christendom
  • Understand the reason for so many different Protestant denominations today.

  • Chapter 8 - Judaism
Questions to consider as you read the Chapter 8: 
  1. Compare the content and role of the Torah and the Talmud, in Judaism?
  2. Define the role of the temple in much of biblical Judaism. How did Jewish religious practice change following its destruction in 70 C.E.?   
  3. What led to the Holocaust and what was one 'major result'?  
  4. Identify the 4 different divisions of modern Judaism.

  • Chapter 9 - Christianity 
Questions to consider as you read the Chapter 9:

  2. Who was the Apostle Paul and how did he carry out his mission in the world? 
  3. What is the meaning of orthodox in the Christian tradition, and what led to the historic separation between Orthodox and Western Christianity Catholicism)? 
  4. What led to the development of the Protestant expression of the Christian faith?
  5. What are current issues that challenge the church today?
