Week 3 Content

This week we will be studying Buddhism, a religious tradition that grew out of Hinduism when a young Hindu prince decided to leave the security of a palace and encountered suffering in the world around him. He felt compelled to embark on a spiritual journey in the world and within his own life, and became enlightened and began teaching the basic principles known now as Buddhism. 
 
Week 3 Objectives: 
Through assigned readings, writing, discussion and assessment, the student will be able to: 
  • Identify beliefs and values that Buddhism holds true, which comes from Hinduism.
  • Identify the issues that led Siddhartha Gautama to leave his own and family traditions behind, to establish another religion.
  • Discover why Buddhism spread to other continents while Hinduism remained much more isolated

  • Chapter 4 - Buddhism
Keep these study questions in mind as you read Chapter 4:
 
1. What two questions led to Siddhartha Gautama to leave a life of luxury and begin his search for truth?
2. What did "the Buddha" tell his followers just before he died?
3. What are the three major branches of Buddhism?
 
Know the Four Noble Truths, and answer the following questions:
 
1. What causes suffering?
2. How do you minimize it?
3. How does one become released from it?

just off the south Indian coast.You will enjoy the pictures and her comments on what she saw and
experienced first hand during her year in that setting. Here is the video. Remember to watch in
shorter segments if you cannot view it in one sitting.

Assignment 3.1: Week 3 Discussion 
  • Post/Participate in the Week 3 Discussion. Be sure to post your initial response in your assigned team by 11:55 pm, CST Wednesday, and read all the initial postings on your team, then write 2 peer responses by 11:55 pm, CST, Saturday.
Assignment 3.2: Midway Exam Part I & Part II
 
   Part I: Online (60 pts)
  • Part I is located on the Coursework/Assignments page. This is a multiple choice, matching, timed exam. You will have 30 minutes to complete Part I. The Study Guide with key terms, and study questions are available in the Assignment Handouts. You may use any notes you wish including the text, but you may run out of time if you do not have the information at hand. I suggest you write out, or at least know the definitions fairly well before beginning this part of the exam.
  • Complete the Midway Exam Part I by Saturday, 11:55 pm, CST.
   Part II: Essay (40 pts)
  • Part II consists of completing/answering questions on paper and submitting your paper to the dropbox on the Coursework/Assignments page.
    The Midway Exam Part II: Essay, is located in the Assignments handouts.
  • Submit your Midway Exam Part II: Essay, to the dropbox on the Coursework/Assignments page, by Sunday, 11:55 pm, CST.

 Assignment 3.3: Religious Services Visitation Reflection #1

  •  Submit your visitations experience paper to the dropbox on the Coursework/Assignments page by 11:55 pm, CST, Sunday.
