In this session, we will review some of the key evidence-based guidelines to consider when developing a course/program. These guidelines are present across a range of educational and healthcare education literature as well as other evidence-based course assessment instruments. We will not only be learning more about these guidelines in this session, but also reflecting on how they do or might apply to our own classes/programs.

There are two ways to engage with this session:

  • 2) Working through the eLearning module below:

iLearning 101 - March 2018

iLearning 101: Creating e-learning modules to improve learning With Colleen Steinhauser, MSN

With so much to study from so many different classes, students find it hard to know where to begin and how to engage with course material. In this session, you will learn how to create e-learning modules to help guide your students through important content in more dynamic and interactive ways that will boost their mastery of content and competencies.

Here is the video for the session and click here to access the iLearning 101 handouts:

Creating Engaging Out-of-Class Modules - Feb. 2015

Rather than merely assigning readings or videos to watch and then having students take a quiz and/or post to a discussion board, we will look at examples of how PowerPoint and other technologies can be used to break up readings/videos, reduce cognitive load, and help students to interact with content in ways that foster deeper learning.

Content, Objectives, Assessments, Activities...these are all elements that we commonly think about when preparing a class. But there are also other essential elements to consider such as student backgrounds, the course environment, the tools and technologies being used in the class, etc. In this session, we will consider each of these essential elements and discuss what "systematic alignment" among these might look like and why it is important for our course designs.

We will discuss some of the basic instructional design and evidence-based teaching methods that can be used to improve the quality of our teaching and deepen the learning in our classes. Come prepared to share the steps that you go through when you are designing and implementing your courses.

From Boss Baby to the Fantastic Four: Group Facilitation StrategiesOct. 25, 2017

Working with groups in any setting can be challenging. In this session, we will learn more about group processes, facilitation strategies, etc. and how to better work with students and co-workers in these ways. This session was facilitated by Dorothy Samson and Eric Kyle. Click here for handouts for this session.

Critical Thinking: What is it, how do we teach it, and how can assessment 'deepen' it in our courses. Summary of sessions held in October, 2017

Critical thinking is taught in core curricula across the academy. This session will provide a definition of critical thinking and how learners can be engaged to be critical thinkers and how we can deliver and assess the content. This session was facilitated by Harsha Sharma and Larry Hughes. Click here to see a capture of key topics from the session.

Blended Huddle: A Team-based Case Study Teaching Integration Strategy – Held on April 17th & 18th 2017

Utilizing case studies for teaching and team based learning have been established as effective teaching strategies, but blending them together successfully can be a challenge. This session will provide an overview of integrating these two pedagogies to create a dynamic way to actively engage students. This session was facilitated by Heather Henrichs. Click here for the handouts for the session.

In this session, we discussed how different generations learn as well as some of the different learning styles that students might have and how we can better teach to meet these diversities. This session was offered on multiple occasions and below are two different sessions on this topic. Also, be sure to check out the handouts for this session. Enjoy!

The video above provides a brief introduction to Emergenetics.

The video above provides an overview of different learning style theories (Myers-Brigg in particular) as well as generations theories.
